Yule is the celebration of the Winter Solstice. It falls on or around December 21st. This sabbat is known as the “Return of the Light.” From this point on, the days will grow longer and longer. Fir trees are associated with this celebration because they stay green year-round. They symbolize the resilience of life even in the harshest conditions and the idea that life can thrive even when surrounded by death (winter).

Getting the Yule card is exciting because it means you’ve completed a cycle! This could be an obvious completion of something like quitting a job or the changing of seasons.

This completion could also be energetic. Do you sense a change in the air but you can’t quite put your finger on it? It’s not your imagination, Goddess. Something major has shifted. Welcome the “Return of the Light” into your life and get your glow back! You’ve been through a lot to get to this point. You’ve earned it.

Practical Magic for the Modern Goddess

To celebrate this joyful sabbat, get yourself a fir tree and decorate it with apples, popcorn garland, cinnamon sticks, and red bows. Give gifts to your friends and family to celebrate the prosperity that will come as the days get longer and warmer. Wreaths, mistletoe, candles, and lights are also part of the Yule tradition, so basically, deck out your altar the same way you’d “deck the halls.”

The main event of this sabbat is the burning of the Yule log. You can write all the things you’d like to release from that past year on strips of paper and tie them to your Yule log. Burn the log as you celebrate the end of another year and welcome the next cycle.
