THE SCRYING ORACLE CARD || THE MODERN GODDESS ORACLE DECK
Secrets lurk below the surface.
Scrying is a magical practice where you gaze at a shiny, reflective surface to glimpse images, symbols, or messages from the spirit realm. You can scry with a crystal ball, a black mirror, a piece of glass, or a cauldron full of water.
If the Scrying card shows up it could mean that something in happening below the surface. Nefarious things are in motion. This is a card of secrets and deception.
Perhaps someone close to you isn’t being honest. Dig a little deeper and use your intuition. Does this person seem sincere to you? If you’re about to sign any contracts or commit to partnerships, read the fine print. There might be something you’re not being told.
Sometimes the person keeping the secret is you. Are you trying to hide your true motivations in order to get someone to do what you want? You’re playing with fire, Goddess. Secrets have a way of rising to the surface like rotting fish.
The Scrying card may also mean you or someone close to you is trying to sneak away from conflict. You can call that person out and confront the situation, or you can let that person leave your life for good.
If you’re the one sneaking around, ask yourself why. What are you afraid of? You might need to make some tough decisions about the people that you’ve outgrown.
Practical Magic for the Modern Goddess
To scry, you have to relax your body and allow your gaze to soften. Think about looking “beyond” the shiny surface rather than focusing on the surface itself. It might help to turn off all the lights and light a candle as you practice this form of divination.
You can also do this outside using the light of the moon.
Scrying is very similar to picking out shapes in the clouds. You have to trust your intuition quite a bit. It can also help to draw some tarot or oracle cards for additional guidance as you scry to confirm messages or provide more information.
For example, if you glimpse a shape that reminds you of a diamond ring, you can draw a tarot or oracle card asking, “What else can you tell me about this diamond ring?”
If you get a romantic card (like the Beltane card) as your answer, you might take that to mean a proposal of marriage is in your future. If you get a card about transformation (like the Fire card) you might take that to mean it’s time to make a choice regarding your relationship. Maybe the Fire card confirms a feeling you’ve been having to end a relationship or rekindle an old flame.
There are no wrong answers here, and it’s totally fine if you end up just plain confused. Even the most experienced goddesses get “fuzzy” messages. Scrying is a skill that takes practice.
If you consistently get confusing messages, consider cleansing your divination tools in the light of the next full moon.
To make your own witchy black mirror, start with a picture frame. Any picture frame will work as long as the glass is removable. Take out the glass and spray one side of it with black paint. Let it dry overnight before putting it back in the frame. The painted side should go on the inside so you have a smooth glass surface to gaze into.
Hang this up in your room and say, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, show me my secret admirer!” You can ask your mirror absolutely anything. Sometimes you’ll get your answer. Sometimes you won’t.
If you don’t want your roommate, spouse, or AirBnB guest to be weirded out by your black mirror and wonder if you’re the actual witch from a children’s movie, you can also keep the mirror wrapped in a special cloth when you’re not using it for your witchy rituals.
