THE candle gazing ORACLE CARD || THE MODERN GODDESS ORACLE DECK

What must you give up?

Candle gazing is a spiritual practice for meditation and divination. It’s basically just what it sounds like—you light a candle and gaze at the base of the flame while you open your mind to messages from your intuition or higher power.

When the Candle Gazing card shows up, there might be something in your life that you need to give up in order to move forward. The practice of candle gazing is basically an offering to your intuition, spirit guides, or higher power. By performing this meditation, you are giving your precious time and energy to gain valuable insight into your life. It’s a sacrifice of sorts.

What precious thing must you give up for the purpose of your spiritual growth right now? What piece of your life can you offer? What have you clung so tightly to for a long time? Offer it up as a loving sacrifice.

Remember, just because you give something up, doesn’t mean you’ll never get it back. In fact, many times it is the exact moment you release your desire that you receive it.

So what is it, Goddess? What is most precious to you? Can you bear to part with it?

If you need further clarification, feel free to draw another card to see what you need to give up.

Practical Magic for the Modern Goddess

To add candle gazing into your spiritual practice, sit quietly in a place where you know you won’t be disturbed for a couple of minutes.

Bring your awareness to the places where your body is making contact with the floor. It’s especially important to feel grounded before you begin this ritual.

Rest your arms on your lap and turn your palms face up so they are ready to receive energy. If you are concerned about feeling cold, keep a blanket or sweater nearby.

When you feel grounded and relaxed, say the words, “I call on the element of fire to warm my heart and open my mind to new messages.”

Light a red candle (or whatever you have on hand). Tea lights and birthday candles work just fine.

Bring your gaze to the very base of the flame. Blink whenever you feel the need. Allow your gaze to go a bit unfocused. Practice closing your eyes and seeing the flame behind your eyelids. This is how you will begin to bring that fire energy into your body.

As you alternate focusing on the flame with your eyes open and shut, visualize the light of the flame seeping into your body. Breathe in the light, feel the subtle heat on your skin, and listen for any quiet, comforting sounds the candle makes.

Visualize the fire energy in the form of a golden light welling up in your chest. In your mind’s eyes, see it getting bigger and brighter until it fills your body, the room, and the entire building you’re sitting in.

If any thoughts, images, or messages appear in your mind, notice them and allow them to move through you.

To end your ritual, deepen your breath and slowly bring your awareness back to the room. Blow out your candle if it hasn’t burned down all the way.

Your ritual is complete! Feel free to journal about any feelings, thoughts, or images that passed through your consciousness during your candle gazing meditation.
