Beltane is a sabbat that is celebrated on May 1st. It’s all about sensuality, beauty, creation, and fertility. Everyone dances around a maypole, and women who are hoping to become pregnant will jump over boiling cauldrons.
When the Beltane card appears, it’s a call to get in touch with your inner child. Look for that sparkle in your eye and in the eyes of the people around you. We were all joyful, laughing carefree children at some point.
Take time to play, and don’t worry about looking stupid. When something comes to your mind today, go ahead and say it. Children don’t hold back. If you feel any emotions bubble up inside of you, share them! Don’t push them down or bottle them up. Be wild. Be playful. And don’t worry about annoying others. Children don’t care about stuff like that!
Now is the time to invite others to have fun with you. See if you can glimpse their inner child from the energy radiating from their smile or the twinkle in their eyes.
Practical Magic for the Modern Goddess
Perform your favorite love meditations and rituals on Beltane! Have a bonfire with friends. Brew some love potion. Light red and pink candles. Sprinkle flower petals all over your altar and create love-themed charm bags.
To make a love charm bag, fill a small pouch with rosebuds, rosemary, mint, and a cinnamon stick. Add a pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt and the petals of any flowers currently in bloom. Finally, write your intention on a piece of paper and slip that into your charm bag before you close it up. Bonus points if you have red or pink string to tie up your charm bag. Leave it outside the night before Beltane to charge and carry it with you to attract love.
To create a Beltane love poppet, cut two identical “poppet” shaped pieces of cloth. If you have any large gingerbread boy (or girl!) cookie cutters, you can use those to trace your poppet shape on a couple pieces of cloth. Using a needle and thread, stick together the two pieces of fabric along the outer edge. Leave an opening near the poppet’s heart. That’s where you’ll stuff your poppet.
Turn your poppet inside-out and begin stuffing it with your flower petals and herbs. You can use the same ingredients as you would for the love charm bag. On a small piece of paper, make a list of all the qualities you want in a lover. Fold the list up and put it inside your poppet. Sew up the poppet and take it on a date.
No, seriously! Go on a date with your poppet! If you want to go out to a nice dinner with your future beloved, buy yourself a nice dinner and bring the poppet along in your purse with you. If you love watching netflix and cuddling, hold the poppet close as you binge-watch your favorite show. As you do these activities, think about all the warm, fuzzy feelings you’ll experience when you’re with your future lover.
